Love Your Home – The DIY You Can Do In The Lockdown

Love Your Home

You can start to get a bit of cabin fever when you have little choice but to spend the majority of your days indoors at home. The key is to somehow stay stimulated and we have a great solution in mind to help you do it – a bit of DIY.

The very mention of DIY may make you let out an audible groan, but we don’t do enough of it and when you don’t give your abode the attention it deserves, it can impact on your home life.

You need pleasant home surrounds at a time like this, so get off the sofa, assign different roles to your fellow housemates and channel your inner Handy Andy. James Oliver has created you a little DIY to-do list to act as motivation:

Refresh the appearance of a room by repainting it

If there is a room in your house with a colour scheme that leaves you questioning yourself “what was I thinking?” or just badly needs updating, now is the time to treat it to a new coat of paint.

It’s spring, so a sage or olive green would bring cheer to a room this season, and beyond that, or try a coral colour of some kind, which will inject a happy feel into a space. For the brightest colour of the lot, a buttery yellow would be just the ticket.

You can still get hold of paint online and once it’s delivered to your door, dish out paint brushes to everyone to speed up the process of repainting.

Marks on walls you want rid of? Apply a stain blocker to them to mask these marks and any blemishes.

Tip One

Fix anything that needs mending and upcycle

You have no choice but to see to any small fixes yourself as you can’t recruit outside help, but not to worry.

It’s easy to patch a hole in your walls, unclog a drain or faucet, cure a sticking door, tighten cabinetry hardware etc. when you have a trusty toolbox at home and hundreds of video tutorials on YouTube you can watch to show you how to do it.

Stay busy by upcycling too and transforming old stuff into new stuff.

Sand down an unused piece of wood furniture and give it a fresh new finish or do similar to those old pallets you have and turn them into a fancy coffee table. Just think outside the box.

Tip Two

Make your garden your prime living spot

We’re being encouraged to use our gardens as much as we can, and with the weather fast improving, there’s every opportunity to do just that.

If the garden has been untouched since last summer, start by cleaning it up with a bit of weeding, pruning, strimming and mowing.

As soon as it’s back in shape, dust off all the garden furniture and the barbecue so that you can wine and dine al fresco for the coming months.

Prise the kids from the indoors too by putting out the swing, slide and whatever else they like playing with outdoors. They need some fun in their lives while being away from their school mates.
