Should You Replace Your Front Door With UPVC Or Composite?

From aesthetics to functionality, your front door is a vital part of your home that should not be overlooked.

The front door plays a large role in the overall visual appeal of a home as it is the focal point that visitors tend to see first. While the look of a front door is very important, its structural functionality should not be overlooked as it needs to keep your home secure.

If you feel that your front door is lacking in either of these areas, then it is likely time to upgrade and two of the most popular options are composite doors and UPVC doors.

While most people are familiar with UPVC doors, they might not have the same knowledge of composite doors.

What is a composite door made of?

A composite door is exactly as its name suggests and is constructed by combining several different materials including foam, wood, UPVC and wrapping them in a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) skin to create a sort of hybrid door.

While a composite door can have a very traditional timber appearance due to its wood grain GRP skin, it is anything but and is much more durable and weather resistant than a timber door.

One of composite doors’ best attributes is their inherent strength from the variety of materials used in their construction and at James Oliver we offer the very best in thermally efficient and secure composite doors.

What is the difference between UPVC and composite doors?

While composite doors are built with several materials, UPVC are constructed solely from plastic and have a slimmer frame than their thicker, composite counterparts.

Due to the fact that UPVC doors are constructed utilising only one material, they also require less complex manufacturing resulting in a lower price point.

However, the lower price point of UPVC doors does not necessarily mean they are a lesser product than composite doors as they have exceptional security and thermal properties as well.

Do composite and UPVC doors require much maintenance?

It is important to keep your doors looking and working their best, and doing so is a piece of cake. To clean your door, simply give the frames a thorough wipe down about three times per year with warm soapy water – it is important to avoid abrasive materials and solvent based cleaners.

The door furniture, handles, locks and hinges should be checked and lubricated annually to keep them operating in peak condition.

The drainage holes and threshold should be checked regularly and kept free of debris. This should be done more often during periods of bad weather in order to keep water out of the seals.
